How to know what graphics card for a pc thats gonna fit?

im looking to buy myself a graphics card nothing fancy and wanted to know how do you know what graphics card can fit in your pc is there anything i can access through the computer that will help me or do i have to open my pc up and take a look at my motherboard pci pci express agp i dont know the difference help
