Do companies ever vet applicants based on political affiliation in the uk? is this legal?

im thinking of joining a far left political party but am worried this could jepordise any future employment as a civil servant.. Ive heard many stories about companies using social networking sites to screen employees and am worried i could be blacklisted without even realising it, any help?
